The initiative forms part of Barcelona’s designation as World Capital of Architecture in 2026, with work starting this year using €5.4 million in public funding.
The project emerged from an ideas competition targeting young architects seeking sustainable, low-impact solutions.
Furthermore, all proposals incorporate vegetation, natural materials and energy efficiency measures. Consequently, residents will benefit from improved lighting, ventilation, and thermal comfort alongside expanded living space.
Barcelona Architecture Transformation Details Revealed
Each district will see unique interventions blending aesthetics with functionality. In Ciutat Vella, the placeta de Martina Castells will feature a brick facade with integrated planters and a vegetative pergola. Meanwhile, Eixample’s project at Nàpols Street 103 will incorporate metallic structures supporting balconies, photovoltaic panels and vertical gardening systems.
Sants-Montjuïc’s Francesc Masclans i Girvès garden will showcase yellow ceramic cladding with prefabricated balconies and solar panels. Additionally, Les Corts will see its Lluçà Street wall transformed into a three-part facade with metallic galleries incorporating traditional shutters.
The comprehensive approach represents what Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet calls “the legacy we want to leave the city” during the capital year. All remodelling works have received approval from property owners and neighbours, ensuring community support throughout implementation.
This urban renewal initiative follows other recent infrastructure developments, including the remarkable engineering achievements within Barcelona’s metro system. The city continues balancing historical preservation with modern sustainability requirements across all development projects.
According to La Vanguardia’s detailed coverage, the exhibition “De medianeras a fachadas” remains open to the public until December 14th at the former Gustavo Gili publishing headquarters. The display features models, plans and images showing the complete transformation process from current conditions to awarded projects and technical developments.
