The event, organised by Barcelona’s Institute of Culture, ran from Wednesday to Sunday across two key venues: Fabra i Coats and the Ignasi Iglésias – Can Fabra Library.
This year’s festival featured an impressive 78 activities and welcomed 163 authors from 13 different countries.

The programme explored diverse themes including Catalan mythology, monster archetypes, climate fiction, and LGBTQ+ and feminist representation within fantasy genres. Festival curator Ricard Ruiz described the event as reaching a moment of “consolidation, plenitude and celebration.”
Fantasy Festival Barcelona celebrates literary diversity
The festival’s thematic depth was matched by its star-studded lineup of international authors. Participants included acclaimed writers such as V.E. Schwab, David Lloyd, Stella Tack, Fonda Lee, and Claire North, alongside prominent Spanish and Catalan authors including Rosa Montero, Sebastià Alzamora, and Joan-Lluís Lluís.
Three special conventions honoured literary giants China Miéville, Angela Carter, and Ursula K. Le Guin, while two major exhibitions explored Catalonia’s fantasy tradition and local mythology. Furthermore, the event demonstrated how Catalans consistently show strong engagement with cultural activities across the region.
According to official festival documentation, the five-day programme successfully normalised fantasy literature within Barcelona’s cultural landscape. Ruiz emphasised that speculative genres have achieved the same level of acceptance that crime fiction and other literary forms previously attained.
The festival’s growing popularity reflects Barcelona’s vibrant literary scene and the city’s commitment to diverse cultural programming. This successful edition of Fantasy Festival Barcelona establishes the event as a key date in the international fantasy literature calendar, attracting both local enthusiasts and international visitors to the Catalan capital.
