A new report has revealed that Barcelona’s Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes is the most dangerous urban street in Spain for fatal pedestrian accidents.

The study, Walking Safely: Pedestrian Accidents and Risks in Spain (2014–2023), published by the Fundación Línea Directa, shows that in the last decade 3,500 pedestrians have been killed in traffic accidents nationwide, while 130,000 more were injured. Of these, over 17,000 required hospitalisation.

One in five people killed in traffic accidents in Spain were pedestrians. Alarmingly, the report highlights that in 72% of pedestrian accidents the victim had not committed any traffic violation.

In urban areas, where 86% of incidents take place, the fatality rate is eight times higher than on rural roads due to vehicle speed. Pedestrian deaths in cities are most often caused by cars, responsible for seven out of ten fatal accidents.

The study also noted that accidents occur most frequently on weekdays, especially between October and December. Worryingly, 41% of pedestrians who died had consumed drugs, alcohol or medication that impaired their reactions.

Gran Via’s ranking as Spain’s deadliest street underscores the urgent need for improved urban safety measures in Barcelona, particularly in high-traffic areas.
