The Ciutadella del Coneixement project, according to El Nacional, represents a massive rethinking of urban public space.
Key Pieces of the Ciutadella del Coneixement Puzzle
Several major components define this project. First, the park’s historic axis will be revitalised. However, this includes four key buildings from the 1888 Universal Exposition: the Umbracle, the Martorell Museum, the Hivernacle, and The Castell dels Tres Dragons.
Meanwhile, Barcelona Zoo is undergoing a major five-year conversion. It’s shifting from an old-fashioned model to a modern facility focused on biodiversity. New projects like the Bioscope and ‘Descobrim la Mediterrània’ will reshape a third of its grounds. A new public walkway will also be built through the zoo.
Another critical piece is the long-delayed Central Library. It’s now slated for completion by 2030 on a large plot near Estació de França.
The Scientific Heart: Mercat del Peix Complex
The central scientific axis of the Ciutadella del Coneixement will be the new Mercat del Peix research complex. Built on the site of the old fish market, this 46,000-square-metre hub will be a European leader.
Ciutadella Del Coneixement: Key Details
The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) building will host 800 researchers. A second building will be home to UPF’s Planetary Well-being Research Centre. However, the third will host the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE). Meanwhile, below these buildings, a new 7,000-square-metre public car park will be built by B:SM. It’s designed as a mobility hub with electric charging and bike parking.
Other pieces include expanding the UPF campus by demolishing old military housing on Wellington Street. Two new CSIC biomedical research centres will also be built nearby. Finally, the project aims to solve the long-standing disconnect between the park and the seafront. However, the 2023 master plan proposes two new pedestrian bridges. Meanwhile, one would link to Barceloneta, the other to the Vila Olímpica.
Overall, the Ciutadella del Coneixement represents a massive urban and intellectual transformation. It weaves together historic preservation, advanced research, and improved public access. However, the project’s success hinges on integrating these many pieces into a cohesive whole for Barcelona’s future.
