Barcelona airport train connection has reached a crucial milestone as Alstom announces the final testing phase for the new FGC trains that will directly link the city centre with El Prat Airport.

According to reports from El País, the long-delayed service is now expected to begin operations by late 2026 or early 2027, finally providing a direct rail link between central Barcelona and both airport terminals.
Barcelona Airport Train Connection Details Revealed
The new R-Aeroport shuttle service will cover 22.7 kilometres with nine strategic stops including Sant Andreu, Sagrera, El Clot, Passeig de Gràcia, Sants, Bellvitge, El Prat, and both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Furthermore, the journey from Passeig de Gràcia to Terminal 1 will take just 19-20 minutes, with trains running every 15 minutes during service hours.
This development represents significant progress for a project that began construction in July 2015 with an original completion target of 2018. Consequently, the infrastructure works are now scheduled to finish by the end of 2025, with testing on the actual tracks planned for summer 2026. The Barcelona airport train connection will be the first time FGC trains operate on Adif tracks where Renfe normally runs.
Generalitat President Salvador Illa celebrated the milestone during a factory visit to see the first of ten electric trains. He emphasised that when operational, the line will make airport access “easier, faster and more reliable.” Additionally, the project represents a substantial investment of €107 million for the trains alone, plus €70 million for maintenance.
The new trains feature modern amenities including 20 panoramic screens for train information and nine dedicated to real-time flight updates. Moreover, each train will accommodate 656 passengers with 202 seats and ten doors per side, designed for complete accessibility without steps from the platform.
This Barcelona airport train connection arrives amid growing transport developments in the region. Meanwhile, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya will hire 70 new drivers to operate the service, creating employment opportunities while enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure. The completion of this project will finally provide Barcelona with a comprehensive rail link to its international airport, addressing years of transportation gaps for both residents and visitors alike.
