The free exhibition, running until 1 February 2026, forms part of the metro’s centenary celebrations and provides unique insights into how underground transport has shaped the city’s development.

Barcelona Metro Exhibition Chronicles Urban Evolution

The exhibition spans six distinct areas that collectively tell the story of Barcelona’s growth through its underground network. Furthermore, it demonstrates how the metro system has become integral to the city’s identity and daily life. According to exhibition commissioner Sergi Martín, ‘This exhibition shows how the metro forms part of Barcelona’s civic identity.’

Visitors can explore reconstructed underground environments including tunnels and carriage simulations. The first section, ‘Dreaming the Future’, examines early metro networks and historical projections about urban transport development. Meanwhile, the second area focuses specifically on how Barcelona’s expansion became possible through its metro infrastructure.

The exhibition arrives amid ongoing debates about Barcelona’s transportation future and how different modes of transport will coexist. TMB president Laia Bonet emphasised during the inauguration that ‘Barcelona has one of the best metro systems in the world,’ highlighting the network’s international recognition.

Interactive elements allow visitors to test their knowledge of the system through games and discover service improvements. These include new rolling stock, integrated ticketing, autonomous driving technology and enhanced station accessibility. The exhibition also features scale models of a standard L9 station and the tunnel-boring machine currently working on the Mandri-Lesseps connection.

Looking ahead, the exhibition outlines future projects targeting the system’s 125th anniversary and 2050 horizon. These include underway extensions to L8 and L9, planned prolongations of L2 and L4, and longer-term proposals like the Horta-to-Vallès tunnels. The Barcelona Metro authority continues to develop these metropolitan-scale ambitions.

Finally, the exhibition explores how the metro has influenced daily life and built collective identity among Barcelona residents. This comprehensive Barcelona Metro exhibition provides a static journey through the past, present and future of the city’s most vital transport network, celebrating both its history and its continuing evolution.
