Barcelona’s “legendary” Phenomena Experience cinema is set to close its doors from September 15, 2025, marking the end of an era for local and international film enthusiasts.

The closure, however, is not permanent: the cinema plans a major renovation and aims to reopen in early 2026 with what management promises will be a “revolutionary new experience” for audiences. Founded by Nacho Cerdá in 2014, Phenomena has built a reputation as one of the finest auditoriums in Spain, renowned for its vast screen, 4K and film projection capabilities, and exceptional sound.

The decision to embark on this transformation coincides with international recognition: on September 5, the cinema will receive the Carlo Lizzani European Cinema Award during the Venice Film Festival—an honor celebrating institutions with exceptional dedication to cinematic culture. Over its decade-long history, Phenomena has welcomed acclaimed directors like Santiago Segura and J.A. Bayona and has consistently ranked among the world’s top cinema venues.

Whilst it is no doubt an institution in Barcelona, it has been left behind by other cinemas, the refusal to allow seat bookings often means you have to turn up 45 mins early to get a decent seat. The concession stand does not accept cards, and there have been numerous reports of over zealous staff. Cinema-goers of Barcelona hope that all of these challenges are fixed when it re-opens its doors.

The team behind Phenomena assures its loyal audience that, while the doors may temporarily close, its spirit and commitment to quality will only be elevated upon reopening in 2026. For more background and the official announcement check the social pages of the Phenomena.
