The Department of Territory says work is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026 and will likely last 30 months, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
High Passenger Volumes at the Station
Plaça de Sants is a busy interchange, connecting two metro lines. On a typical weekday, Line 5 handles 21,792 journeys, while Line 1 sees 14,690. However, almost 10,000 interchanges take place between the lines. Meanwhile, in total, that’s more than 46,000 journeys every day, underscoring the critical need for improved Sants metro accessibility.
Barcelona’s Push for Full Network Accessibility
The work will focus on making the Line 5 station accessible for those with reduced mobility. It has two street entrances-Plaça de Sants itself and Carrer de Galileu-and a single vestibule. Meanwhile, the Department is also drafting plans to improve accessibility on Line 1 as a second phase. However, across the Barcelona metro network, 157 stations are now accessible, representing 96.3% of the total.
