Barcelona’s record-breaking tourism boom is showing signs of strain, with local businesses warning of weaker spending and shorter visits despite rising arrival numbers.

Official figures paint a picture of growth. Catalonia’s airports reported double-digit passenger increases in July—Girona up 14%, Reus 11.5%, and Barcelona’s El Prat 2.9% to 5.54 million travellers. Cruise traffic also surged, with 2.15 million passengers disembarking in the city this year, a 12% jump. Yet on the ground, hoteliers, retailers, and restaurateurs say the summer season has felt markedly cooler.

“Sales are down, even if footfall remains steady,” said Elvira Garcia, director general of Barcelona Oberta, representing 24 commercial hubs. A survey of its members found 53% reported lower sales this summer, while 40% noted fewer visitors. Garcia points to rising travel costs, extreme heat, and growing concerns about safety that may be deterring family tourism. “People are trying to save more—eating in their hotel rooms or apartments,” she added.

The cracks are showing in key metrics. Average hotel stays fell from 2.64 to 2.46 nights in July, while overnight stays dipped 1.3% to 2.23 million. Daily spending excluding accommodation slid to €99.23, nearly €7 less than last year. Around La Rambla and Plaça Reial, ongoing construction has further cut into foot traffic.

Barcelona remains Europe’s cruise capital and a global conference hub, with 59 major congresses scheduled this autumn. But the mixed summer performance underlines a shift: while arrivals continue to rise, the city’s challenge is keeping visitors spending—and staying—long enough to sustain its tourism-driven economy.
