New Trambesòs trams have officially entered commercial service, marking a significant upgrade for Barcelona’s public transport network.
According to El Periódico, three new Citadis X05 models began operating on Friday across the T4, T5 and T6 lines after completing extensive safety testing and driver training programmes.
The addition brings the total Trambesòs fleet to 21 vehicles, providing much-needed capacity increases during peak travel times.

Enhanced Trambesòs Trams Feature Modern Design
Manufactured by Alstom in Santa Perpètua de la Mogoda, the new Trambesòs trams incorporate cutting-edge accessibility and safety features while maintaining exterior continuity with the existing fleet. Each vehicle measures 32.5 metres in length and 2.65 metres in width, featuring five modules that can accommodate up to 218 passengers.
The interior design prioritises passenger comfort with 56 ergonomic seats, wider spaces, and improved natural lighting. Additionally, the trams include contrast colour schemes to aid navigation and specially adapted areas for passengers with reduced mobility.
Modern amenities extend to digital information systems, USB charging ports, and audio announcements tailored for hearing-impaired passengers. Consequently, these features collectively enhance the commuting experience for all users.
Advanced Technology Powers New Trambesòs Fleet
The latest Trambesòs vehicles operate using either overhead catenary power or the APS ground-based feeding system. This dual capability allows them to navigate sensitive urban sections like Diagonal between Glòries and Verdaguer, where electricity is supplied through a surface-level third rail.
Energy efficiency technology and real-time occupancy monitoring represent significant upgrades from previous models. Moreover, each tram contains 12 T-mobilitat validators installed at doors to optimise passenger flow and reduce boarding bottlenecks that commonly occur during rush hours.
Driver cabins have been completely redesigned for improved ergonomics, visibility and safety. Meanwhile, the vehicles feature LED lighting with light sensors, surveillance cameras, and occupancy-based climate control systems.
