Trinitat Vella community centre will finally reopen in early 2026 after a three-year closure caused by hazardous formaldehyde gas.
The Barcelona City Council announced the news this Friday, marking the end of a lengthy remediation process that began when two workers suffered respiratory irritation.
Health Councillor Marta Villanueva and centre manager Javier Pascual confirmed the reopening timeline.

Villanueva called it a positive development for a space designed to be “full of life.” The facility originally opened in March 2022 to consolidate social, civic, and community services.

However, the council closed the building preventatively in January 2023. This decisive action followed health complaints from two employees. Consequently, an investigation detected elevated levels of formaldehyde in the indoor air.
Formaldehyde is a colourless gas with a strong, characteristic odour. It is commonly used in manufacturing materials like furniture, paints, and varnishes. High concentrations can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, breathing difficulties, and headaches.
“This is a unique case we haven’t found elsewhere,” Pascual stated. “We therefore acted under the principle of prudence, which took more time, but we will reopen with all guarantees.”
The source was traced to the building materials themselves. Over the past three years, technicians have worked to reduce particle presence below city-wide background levels. The most effective solution involved applying a specialised technical paint that absorbs and dissolves organisms.
Furthermore, the ventilation system was completely reviewed and changed to prevent accumulations of stale air. These modifications were completed during 2024, with the past year dedicated to monitoring stable formaldehyde levels.
A final comprehensive cleaning and review of elevators and fire extinguishers will occur before the official reopening. The council expects this to happen during the first quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, most services have continued in other neighbourhood locations, with very few relocated to Sant Andreu.
This reopening represents a significant victory for local residents who rely on integrated community services. It also highlights the complex challenges of maintaining modern urban infrastructure and public health standards. The council’s cautious approach underscores its commitment to worker and user safety above all else.
