L8 metro construction delays have forced Barcelona authorities to extend Urgell Street’s closure by an additional year.

The traffic restrictions, originally scheduled to end this year, will now remain in place until late 2026 due to slower-than-expected progress on the new FGC line stations.

Residents and businesses along Urgell Street must now endure another twelve months of construction noise, dust, and severely reduced pavement access.

The extended disruption stems from technical challenges with the specialised hydrofraise machinery used to excavate station shafts at depths exceeding 80 metres.

Project officials acknowledge the hydrofraise machine’s performance has been “lower than expected” during initial operations. However, they maintain that work quality remains excellent, with precise vertical alignment achieved and no damage to adjacent buildings. Furthermore, the construction team now understands the ground conditions better, which should accelerate progress on remaining sections.

David Prat, Generalitat’s Director General of Infrastructure, recently addressed concerned residents about the extended timeline. Meanwhile, the project’s complexity was highlighted by comparing excavation depths to the height of La Caixa’s Diagonal tower. The delay in completing station shafts won’t affect the overall tunnel boring schedule, according to Mobility Secretary Manel Nadal.

Additional disruptions are expected as the project advances. Muntaner Street has been closed since August for emergency exit construction, with completion now pushed to early 2027 due to archaeological service strikes. Consequently, from January, Diputació Street near Joan Miró park will also close to handle soil removal from tunnel boring operations.

The massive Barcelona infrastructure project represents one of the city’s most significant transport investments. According to La Vanguardia’s detailed report, the Generalitat will open a citizen assistance point at Escola Industrial to address community concerns.
