A judge in Barcelona has summoned a cyclist for questioning on homicide charges, eight months after a violent altercation resulted in the death of a local waiter. This Barceloneta cyclist homicide case involves a 25-year-old suspect. He is scheduled to appear before Investigating Court Number 10 of Barcelona this Thursday morning. The summons follows a lengthy legal delay.

The summons relates to an incident on 29 June 2025, which claimed the life of 54-year-old Geovanny García. The victim’s family, represented by lawyer Clara Martínez Nogués, filed multiple appeals to expedite proceedings. These appeals have now been accepted by the court.

Barceloneta Cyclist Homicide: A Deadly Encounter at the Crosswalk

Geovanny García was a well-respected waiter in Barceloneta. Colleagues knew him as a hardworking and kind individual. At 05:00 on the morning of the incident, he had just finished his shift. He was heading to the Metro station to return home, accompanied by his son and another colleague.

As the group attempted to use the pedestrian crossing on Carrer del Doctor Aiguader, a cyclist reportedly travelling at high speed invaded the crossing. According to reports, the cyclist rode directly towards them.

García’s son reacted quickly, pushing the cyclist to prevent a direct collision. While the rider stumbled, he did not fall. However, rather than apologising for the near-miss, the cyclist allegedly became aggressive. Police reports indicate he began punching the waiter’s son in retaliation for the push.

The Fatal Blow in the Barceloneta Cyclist Homicide

When García intervened to separate the two men, the cyclist delivered a punch. This blow knocked the 54-year-old unconscious. García collapsed, striking the back of his head violently against the pavement. Officers from the Guardia Urbana, already deployed in the area, arrived to find him lying in a pool of blood.

He was rushed to the Hospital del Mar in critical condition with a severe traumatic brain injury. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three weeks later. He passed away on 17 July 2025.

The cyclist was arrested at the scene by the Guardia Urbana. The police report noted that the suspect displayed “disrespectful behaviour” towards officers. He also provided false details regarding his identity and residence, which disrupted the investigation.

Initially, the suspect was brought before a judge for the crime of causing injuries. He refused to testify and was subsequently released. At that time, García was still alive, which limited the severity of the initial charges.

Following the waiter’s death, the legal scenario shifted significantly. Therefore, the charge has now been upgraded from injuries to homicide. The court must still determine whether it will be classified as reckless (imprudente) or intentional (doloso). Today’s summons marks a pivotal step in the prosecution. This progress is due to the persistent legal efforts of the victim’s family.
