A trial began on Monday at the Provincial Court of Barcelona for a man accused of murdering another man with an iron bar in the city’s seaside neighbourhood of Barceloneta. The public prosecutor is seeking a 20-year prison sentence for the defendant.

The proceedings, which include the formation of a citizen jury, are scheduled to conclude on 25 March. The accused faces a charge of murder with treachery (alevosía), a legal term in the Spanish justice system. This indicates the crime was committed in a way that ensured the victim had no opportunity to defend himself.

The Prosecution’s Account

According to the public prosecutor’s indictment, the incident took place on the night of 1 May 2024. The accused allegedly approached two people in a square in Barceloneta while concealing an iron bar behind his back.

The prosecution claims the defendant then called out to the victim. As the man approached, the accused allegedly struck him on the head with the bar, causing him to fall to the ground instantly. The indictment, as reported by Metrópoli Abierta, states that the attacker then delivered two more blows to the victim while he was on the ground before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.

The prosecutor’s office maintains that the assault occurred in a “sudden and surprising” manner. This element is central to their case for a murder conviction, as they argue the victim, who suffered a catastrophic traumatic brain injury and died shortly after in hospital, was completely defenceless.

Sentence and Compensation Sought

In addition to the 20-year custodial sentence, the prosecution has requested several further penalties. These include a five-year period of supervised release to be served after the prison term and a 10-year restraining order preventing the accused from approaching or communicating with the victim’s mother.

The state is also seeking financial compensation for the victim’s family. A payment of €120,000 is being requested for the victim’s mother to cover moral damages resulting from the violent death of her son.

Violent crime remains a significant concern for authorities in Barcelona and its surrounding areas. This trial follows other serious cases in the city, including the recent sentencing in the Sant Andreu ‘no-body’ murder case and a shooting that left a man seriously injured in Badalona’s Sant Roc neighbourhood.

The trial will continue over the next week, with the jury expected to hear testimony and review evidence before beginning deliberations. The final verdict will determine whether the accused is found guilty of this brutal attack. This case unfolds in a neighbourhood better known for its beaches and vibrant atmosphere, which also recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Metro station.
