Barceloneta street names are poised for a significant transformation as the historic Passeig Nacional designation moves closer to restoration.

The main thoroughfare in Barcelona’s fishing district currently bears the name Passeig de Joan de Borbó, but after more than three decades, local authorities are preparing to reinstate its original 1845 title.

This change represents the latest chapter in Barcelona’s ongoing reassessment of its public spaces.

Furthermore, the restoration has gained momentum through cross-party support, with Junts, ERC and PSC all backing the initiative during a March 2024 vote.

Barceloneta Street Names Reflect Historical Significance

The push to restore Passeig Nacional comes after 13 years of campaigning by local residents and community groups. Meanwhile, historical research confirms the name predates both the Franco regime and Primo de Rivera dictatorship, carrying no problematic political associations.

Manel Martínez, vice-president of the Barceloneta neighbourhood association, emphasises the name’s cultural importance. “It’s a name that for us has a lot of history,” he explained to Tot Barcelona. “It has to do with the warmth of the Barceloneta neighbourhood, representative of many lands and many cultures, and as the entrance of the port to the city.”

The proposal has now reached the Nomenclature Committee, the municipal body responsible for reviewing street name changes. Consequently, local politicians express confidence that the restoration will proceed, marking another step in Barcelona’s broader re-evaluation of its urban identity.

This transformation of Barceloneta street names follows similar changes across the city. For instance, the recent approval of significant developments in Plaça Catalunya demonstrates how Barcelona continues to evolve its urban landscape while respecting historical context.

Additionally, the removal of monarchical references forms part of a wider pattern in Barcelona’s urban planning. Previously, the city has replaced Plaza Juan Carlos I with the popular Plaça del Cinc d’Oros and transformed Avinguda del Príncep d’Astúries into Avinguda de la Riera de Cassoles.

The restoration of Barceloneta street names to their historical forms represents more than just semantic change. Therefore, it signifies the neighbourhood’s reconnection with its maritime heritage and community identity, creating a stronger sense of place for residents and visitors alike.
