The Bellvitge Music Festival (BMF) in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat is facing a turning point. After more than seven years of steady growth, organisers have confirmed that the event will not be held this September as originally planned, citing the risk of “dying of success”.

From Grassroots Idea to Major Urban Event
The BMF was born over seven years ago, created by two young locals, Dani Banda and Marc López, when they were still teenagers. Initially conceived as a small, grassroots event tied to the Fiesta Major of Bellvitge, the festival was free of charge and aimed at providing a stage for emerging urban music artists.
Year after year, the event grew in popularity. By 2024, it had gathered around 6,000 people in the Parc de Bellvitge, making it one of the most successful free music festivals for young audiences in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
“A Victim of Its Own Success”
This success has, paradoxically, become a challenge. Organisers admit that the BMF has now outgrown its original format and that hosting it alongside the Fiesta Major is no longer sustainable. Concerns around safety, crowd management and logistics have pushed them to seek new dates and possibly a different framework for the future.
They stressed that the decision is not a cancellation but a pause to rethink how to adapt the festival to its current scale. “The Bellvitge Music Festival was born from a neighbourhood initiative, and it must continue to be a space for young people, but also one that guarantees safety and quality,” said organisers.
Looking Ahead
The future of the BMF will depend on finding a balance between maintaining its inclusive, community-led spirit and managing its large audiences responsibly. Discussions are underway about possible new dates and venues, which could give the festival more independence from the traditional calendar of neighbourhood festivities.
Whatever the decision, the BMF remains a cultural reference point in L’Hospitalet, celebrating urban music while strengthening the creative identity of the local community. You can follow the festival on Instagram here.
