Strict criteria for selection
The ranking by Lúpulo Digital, led by Vicky di Pau and Agus Blanco, is not merely a popularity contest. The judges evaluated venues based on a rigorous set of criteria. These aimed to identify true quality in the hospitality sector.
Key factors included the quality and storage of the draught beer. The selection and rotation of taps, and the technical knowledge of the staff were also crucial. Additionally, the judges considered the atmosphere and the venue’s commitment to local culture. The intangible ‘human factor’ that encourages customers to return was also important. Many of these modern venues are a new take on the traditional Spanish cervecería (brewery) and snack bar. They blend innovation with cultural roots.
A closer look at the winners
Biercab was founded by a group of friends with a shared passion for artisanal brewing. It has built a loyal following by rotating its extensive tap list weekly. Consequently, there is always something new to try. The venue is also celebrated for its food menu. It elevates the experience with high-quality tapas and sandwiches designed to pair with specific brews.
Garage Beer Co, represented in the top 10 by its Universitat location, positions itself as a purveyor of craft beer made in Barcelona. The brand has expanded significantly. It operates another venue in Poblenou and a production factory in Sant Andreu. The company is currently financing a new taproom through a crowdfunding campaign. This signals further growth for one of the city’s most successful brewing exports. The success of these breweries is part of a wider trend in the artisan food and drink culture in Barcelona. This culture has seen a boom in recent years.
