Iconic Raval bar Sagarra has triumphantly reopened its doors in Barcelona’s historic El Raval neighbourhood.
The beloved establishment, which had remained shuttered since the pandemic forced its closure, has been revived by the specialist Grupo Confiteria.

Iconic Raval Bar Sagarra Returns With Renewed Spirit
Located at the corner of Pintor Fortuny and Xuclà streets, the venue has been reborn as Bodega Sagarra. The restoration group, led by Lito Baldovinos and Enric Rebordosa, announced the news on Instagram. They described a renovated interior that carefully preserves the establishment’s original soul. Furthermore, the menu promises classic small plates with a modern touch.
The bar’s setting remains a key part of its charm. It overlooks the picturesque Plaça dels Gats, a small oasis just metres from La Rambla. According to reports from Tot Barcelona, the new concept focuses on market cuisine designed for sharing. The concise and approachable menu aims to offer something familiar for every visitor.
Signature dishes now include the Sagarra xistorra with rovell, a large cod fritter with alioli, and sea bass with a meat suquet. Additionally, roasted caneló and canapés of white prawn tartare and smoked cod foam feature prominently. This culinary revival follows a period of uncertainty for the historic site.
A Troubled History Finds Hopeful Resolution
The bar’s original closure resulted from a failed rental agreement during the pandemic’s economic turmoil. Previous proprietors Àlex Segarra and Isabel Pressegué could not reach a moratorium deal with the property owner. Consequently, the lease was terminated. The space briefly operated as El Banquet under chef Sergi de Meià in 2023 before closing again last summer.
Grupo Confiteria’s intervention has secured the bar’s future. The group specialises in rescuing and revitalising Barcelona’s historic establishments. Their portfolio now includes around twenty bars and restaurants, many with significant cultural heritage. Recent successful projects include the recovery of the iconic Mundial Bar and La Font del Gat.
Other notable venues under their management include La Confiteria, Paradiso, and the historic Cafè del Centre 1873. The group is also reportedly working to reopen the classic Bar Funicular on Carrer de Girona. This consistent effort demonstrates a committed strategy to safeguard the city’s social and culinary landmarks.
The return of Bodega Sagarra is therefore more than just a new restaurant opening. It represents the successful preservation of a community touchstone.
