James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, was reported missing in the early hours of Tuesday, 17 March. He had become separated from his friends during a night out at the Shôko nightclub on the city’s seafront. His disappearance subsequently prompted a significant search operation and drew widespread media attention in the United States.

Investigators with Catalonia’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, confirmed their subaquatic unit discovered the body at around 6 p.m. on Thursday. It lay at a depth of approximately four metres near a breakwater, close to where Gracey was last seen. The leading hypothesis suggests his death resulted from a tragic accident.

A Search Focussed on the Sea

Gracey, from Elmhurst, Illinois, was visiting friends studying in the Catalan capital for a spring break holiday. He and his companions were staying in a tourist apartment in the Eixample district; he was scheduled to return to the US over the weekend.

His friends raised the alarm on Tuesday morning when Gracey failed to return to the apartment and did not answer his phone. His father immediately flew to Barcelona to follow the search efforts.

The Mossos’ Eixample unit quickly focussed the investigation on the coastline. Witness statements and initial images placed Gracey walking towards the beach after leaving the club. This theory gained support when the search for the missing student shifted to the sea on Wednesday, after his wallet was found floating in the water.

In a separate development on Wednesday, officers from Barcelona’s municipal police, the Guàrdia Urbana, recovered Gracey’s mobile phone. They had stopped a known repeat offender who claimed to have found the device on the beach. While Gracey’s family believes the phone may have been stolen, investigators do not currently believe the incident connects to his death.

Accident Theory Holds Weight

The Mossos d’Esquadra have worked on the assumption of an accident since the early stages of the investigation, which now appears the most likely scenario. According to a report in El País, security cameras from the area captured footage showing Gracey falling into the sea, with no evidence of anyone else involved.

Investigators believe that after leaving the nightclub, possibly under the influence of alcohol, Gracey may have walked onto the rocks or a breakwater before accidentally falling into the water. Police sources have stated there are no initial signs of criminality.

The body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Catalonia for an autopsy. This examination will officially determine the cause of death and formally rule out any other possibilities. Once legal proceedings conclude, the US consulate in Barcelona will assist the family with the repatriation process.

Safety Concerns Arise

While this case is being treated as a tragic accident, it has put a renewed spotlight on safety in Barcelona’s popular coastal nightlife areas. These districts, including the nearby Barceloneta neighbourhood, are a major draw for tourists. However, they have also been the location of unrelated violent incidents, such as a fatal assault for which a trial recently began.
