The Catalan retail group Bon Preu will open its first Esclat hypermarket in Barcelona before the end of the year, marking a significant milestone in its expansion strategy.
The new store will be located at the Culmia Themis Riera complex on Carrer Riera Blanca, in the Sants district. With a total floor space of 7,973 square metres — including 2,047 square metres dedicated to sales — the Esclat Riera Blanca is set to become a major retail destination for the area. The launch is scheduled for December, just in time for the crucial Christmas shopping season.

According to Bon Preu, the supermarket will feature a wide range of departments, including a butcher’s with matured meats, a fish counter, bakery, fruit and vegetable section, rotisserie, delicatessen and self-service cheese displays. It will also include a drugstore, perfumery, off-licence, pet supplies, a pharmacy corner, children’s play area, and facilities for electric vehicle charging.
The wider Themis Riera development, managed by Culmia, comprises residential buildings, a care home, retail units and over 6,000 square metres of green space. Bon Preu has secured the largest commercial space in the complex, with ground-floor and basement areas tailored to its Esclat model.
The opening comes during a year of strong growth for Bon Preu. In the first half of 2025, the group has already launched new Bonpreu stores in Terrassa-Matadepera and Barcelona’s Travessera de Gràcia, an Esclat in Cunit, and two petrol stations in Anglès and La Seu d’Urgell. More outlets are scheduled before year’s end, including supermarkets in Terrassa and Mollerussa, another Esclat in l’Ametlla de Mar, and additional service stations.
Financially, Bon Preu closed 2024 with record revenues of €2.42 billion — its first time surpassing the €2.4 billion mark — reflecting a 7.1% increase on the previous year. The expansion of its Esclat brand into Barcelona itself signals both confidence in consumer demand and ambition to strengthen its market presence against competitors such as Mercadona, Carrefour and Lidl.
