The Borges Blanques Oil Fair opens this week, marking a significant turning point for Catalonia’s olive oil producers. Consequently, the sector is recovering from three difficult harvest years. Significantly, a record 51 producers are attending the fair—the highest number in its history. Meanwhile, the harvest has reached nearly six million kilos.

This record participation reflects renewed optimism among farmers. Previously, they faced severe challenges from drought and poor weather. Enric Dalmau, president of the Les Garrigues Protected Designation of Origin (DOP), stated that production volumes are finally recovering.

Borges Blanques Oil Fair unites Catalan oil denominations

This year’s edition marks a significant shift in sector cooperation. For the first time, the Borges Blanques Oil Fair has brought together all five Protected Designations of Origin (DOP) for oil in Catalonia. Therefore, this gathering consolidates the event as the central reference point for the region’s high-quality oil industry.

The Diputació de Lleida confirmed the unprecedented gathering of all five denominations. They described it as a key moment for promoting extra virgin olive oil. In addition, the event programme includes professional networking sessions and public activities. These activities connect consumers directly with producers. Furthermore, such events align with regional strategies, like the tourism strategy to disperse visitors across Catalonia.

Borges Blanques Oil Fair highlights drought recovery

The atmosphere at the Borges Blanques Oil Fair contrasts sharply with previous years. Following three consecutive years of poor harvests from drought, the return to six million kilos provides economic relief. This recovery is crucial, especially after the recent Catalan farmer protests highlighted sector concerns.

Farmers at the event expressed relief that the difficult weather cycle appears broken. Therefore, they can now look forward rather than focus on damage limitation.

Government focuses on agricultural modernisation at fair

Minister of the Presidency Albert Dalmau inaugurated the Borges Blanques Oil Fair. He highlighted the government’s focus on the agricultural sector’s future. Moreover, he emphasised that long-term viability depends on farms updating their operations.

“The future of the sector depends in good part on adaptation to new needs and technologies,” Dalmau said. He assured producers of the administration’s commitment to help modernise facilities. This support is vital as the industry confronts climate issues and recent agricultural biosecurity challenges.
