Emergency services responded to the landmark hotel, located on Gran Via, at approximately 4:00 AM. Upon arrival, they found the child, who had fallen an estimated 15 metres. Sources consulted by the newspaper ARA suggest the boy may have been playing with another child when he lifted a grate covering an opening and fell through.
The Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), Catalonia’s medical emergency service, dispatched five ambulance units to the scene. Paramedics stabilised the boy, who had suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was initially unconscious, before transferring him in a critical state to Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, a leading paediatric centre.
Investigation Focuses on Accidental Fall
The Catalan police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the fall. In statements provided to Europa Press, police sources confirmed they are treating the incident as a tragic accident and have so far found no evidence of criminal activity. Police are conducting a technical inspection of the area where the fall occurred to determine the exact sequence of events and to verify the safety conditions of the premises.
The hotel where the incident took place, the Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower, is one of the most recognisable buildings in the Barcelona metropolitan area. The 105-metre, 29-storey skyscraper, designed by Richard Rogers, is often nicknamed ‘the UFO’ due to the distinctive glass dome that crowns its structure. It is a prominent feature of the skyline in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city that hosts major events such as the popular What the Foc! barbecue festival.
Conflicting Reports on Aftermath
Following the boy’s fall, there were conflicting reports about the atmosphere at the hotel. According to news outlet El Caso, the incident triggered moments of high tension among wedding guests, leading to shouting and some damage within the hotel, which prompted a significant police presence to ensure safety.
However, police sources cited by 20 Minutos have asserted that officers registered no official incidents and made no arrests in connection with the event. The situation reportedly calmed once paramedics safely evacuated the child to the hospital.
The boy remains in hospital with a reserved prognosis, while the Mossos d’Esquadra continue their enquiries to provide a complete picture of how the tragic accident occurred.
