Barcelona café startup Bristol Koffee has revealed the financial realities of launching a specialty coffee business in the city, with founder Lorena disclosing an initial investment of €105,000.
The entrepreneur, who drew inspiration from Bristol’s coffee culture during her time living in the English city, shared detailed insights about monthly expenses and revenue streams in a recent YouTube interview.
Lorena explained that her café typically generates around €12,000 in monthly revenue, though she noted significant seasonal fluctuations.

Furthermore, fixed costs including rent, staff salaries and social security contributions amount to approximately €7,500 monthly. Meanwhile, variable expenses for coffee beans, milk and other supplies range between €9,000 and €10,000 each month.
Barcelona Café Startup Diversification Strategy
The business owner emphasised that successful café operations require more than just coffee sales. “You can’t live on coffee alone,” Lorena stated, highlighting the importance of diversifying product offerings. Consequently, Bristol Koffee introduced bubble tea to their Vilacans neighbourhood location, becoming the first establishment in the area to offer the Korean-inspired drink.
Additionally, the café focuses on handmade pastries and distinctive food pairings that complement their beverage selection. Lorena described their approach as moving beyond typical toast offerings while maintaining focus on quality ingredients and preparation methods. This diversification strategy has proven essential for attracting and retaining customers in Barcelona’s competitive food and beverage landscape.
Staff management presents one of the most challenging aspects of running the café operation. Lorena detailed the difficulties of training employees, handling unexpected absences and conducting recruitment processes. Nevertheless, she remains optimistic about the business’s trajectory, projecting a three-year return on her initial investment if current sales trends continue.
