Cabify tourist surcharge initiatives will soon add one euro to all rides heading to Barcelona’s most popular attractions.

The multinational transport company confirmed this week that journeys to landmarks including Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, the Cathedral, Magic Fountain, Boqueria Market and the cruise terminal will carry the additional fee.

Meanwhile, all profits generated will be distributed to neighbourhood associations across the city.

Cabify Tourist Surcharge Aims To Balance Tourism Impact

The company is simultaneously launching discounts specifically for Barcelona residents. Consequently, this dual approach seeks to strengthen Cabify’s reputation among locals during a critical period for transport legislation. Furthermore, according to recent regulatory developments, the new passenger transport law being processed in Parliament could effectively remove VTC vehicles from metropolitan area streets.

Many restaurateurs, shopkeepers and other business owners have already expressed concern about potential service reductions. Meanwhile, the sector continues to defend its position vigorously. Uber continues adding new taxi drivers willing to work with its software, now approaching 2,000 partnerships. Additionally, Cabify holds 250 VTC licenses for metropolitan operations that won’t expire until 2038.

The company is also pursuing thousands of additional licenses through legal channels. In Madrid alone, it aims for approximately 9,000 permits and recently succeeded in compelling the regional government to enable about 900 requested licenses. Although Barcelona’s pending license numbers remain unspecified and reportedly lower, everything suggests Cabify could maintain its city operations for several more years.

Neighbourhood Benefits From Tourism Revenue

Élite Taxi continues intensifying pressure on administrations to accelerate the new law’s processing and tighten competitor controls. Taxi drivers emphasise that most VTCs operating in the metropolitan area lack the required dual administrative permits. Therefore, they plan to occupy Gran Via and Passeig de Gràcia with at least 3,000 taxis on December 9th.

In this contentious climate, Cabify’s strategy involves applying surcharges to tourists while directing benefits to community organisations. The company also provides discounts to city residents. “Cabify seeks to ensure tourist activity directly contributes to neighbourhood improvement and wellbeing,” company sources elaborated. “We’re compensating for part of the pressure the city experiences and returning resources where they’re most needed.”

The transport firm additionally activated its Cabify Barcelona category this week. This service targets users who have saved their home or work addresses as favourites, offering more affordable trips from neighbourhoods to airports, hospitals or healthcare centres. The company confirms further initiatives will be gradually implemented throughout the coming months.
