A recent cable theft has left Barcelona’s only regulation-size rugby pitch partially in darkness this week. The theft occurred last Thursday at the Teixonera-Vall d’Hebron municipal sports complex. Thieves stole wiring from the lighting towers affecting both football and rugby facilities. This incident represents another blow to Barcelona’s limited rugby infrastructure.

Impact on Local Sports Community
The cable robbery has significantly disrupted training schedules and matches. Consequently, the Horta-Guinardó district confirmed the football field returned to normal last Friday. However, the rugby pitch remained affected throughout the weekend. Moreover, an important league match had to be cancelled due to insufficient lighting. Additionally, training sessions were relocated to alternative venues.

The Marcet Foundation, which manages the facility for the council, filed a police report with Mossos d’Esquadra. Meanwhile, Barcelona City Council acknowledged the ongoing lighting issues. They confirmed repair works resumed this Monday after weekend matches concluded. Furthermore, they expect full resolution within the current week.
Barcelona Rugby’s Limited Options
Paco Peña, FC Barcelona’s rugby section delegate, described the practical challenges. Therefore, the azulgrana couldn’t train last Friday evening due to the darkness. “We had an important weekend match that could decide half the league,” Peña explained. Consequently, they requested access to the club’s Sant Joan Despí sports city.
Fortunately, the directive agreed to open facilities normally reserved for football teams. Meanwhile, the scheduled match proceeded during daytime hours at Teixonera. Nevertheless, electrical problems prevented live broadcasting and affected electronic scoreboards. Furthermore, an evening tournament with French teams went ahead despite difficulties.
Peña expressed frustration about the lack of generator backup during repairs. “We only have three rugby pitches in Barcelona,” he emphasised. “We cannot simply move to another location.”
The incident highlights Barcelona’s limited rugby infrastructure challenges. Meanwhile, local clubs continue adapting to maintain their sporting commitments. The community hopes for swift resolution and improved security measures moving forward.
