Caixa Enginyers membership is set to reach 220,000 by year’s end, adding 4,000 new members in a record-breaking 2025.
The Barcelona-based cooperative’s general director, Juanjo Llopis, announced the milestone during a press briefing, confirming the institution is on track to surpass last year’s €24 million profit.

This growth forms a key part of the ‘Transforma 2026’ strategic plan, which aims for 230,000 members by the end of that period.
Caixa Enginyers Membership Boosted By Mobile Banking
Llopis highlighted the significant impact of a mobile banking service, launched after winning a tender from the Catalan government. This initiative targets towns without physical bank branches. Consequently, the service has directly contributed 400 new members, representing 10% of this year’s total growth. The mobile routes in Girona, Tarragona, and Anoia have already facilitated 1,700 visits and 1,900 ATM transactions.
The cooperative plans to continue its proximity banking strategy, opening between one and three new branches next year. In 2025, it added three in Catalonia—Vilanova i la Geltrú, Vic, and Manresa—plus one in Alicante. The focus remains on opening in regional capitals and municipalities currently served by mobile banking, as well as expanding into new provincial capitals outside Catalonia. Currently, Caixa Enginyers has offices in Bilbao, Zaragoza, Seville, Málaga, Palma, Valencia, and Madrid.
Furthermore, a major strategic shift is underway for the institution’s foundation, coinciding with its 15th anniversary. The foundation will move from pure patronage to acting as a “project tractor,” focusing on social economy, health, financial education, and engineering for social development. The cooperative has contributed approximately €7.5 million to the foundation.
This year also saw significant governance changes. Fèlix Masjuan was renewed as president for another four-year term. Additionally, Carme Botifoll made history by becoming the first woman to serve as secretary, replacing August Bou, who is now vice president. The board also welcomed economist Jordi Martí and former Gas Natural (now Naturgy) executive Antoni Peris as new directors.
One of Caixa Enginyers’ core objectives is to capture a substantial share of the market gap left by the ten savings banks that once operated in Catalonia. This ambition, coupled with its community-focused model and expansion plans, positions the cooperative for continued growth. Its success mirrors a broader trend of cooperative and social economy models gaining traction, as seen in other areas like Barcelona’s cooperative housing initiatives.
