The renovation will triple the size of the children’s play area. Additionally, the project includes installing outdoor gym equipment for older residents. A new calisthenics area with adapted machines will also be created. Nou Barris district, home to over 170,000 residents, will benefit significantly from these upgrades. The council stated these improvements aim to enhance community facilities.
The current dog zone will move to a new, better-integrated location. This new space will be further from residential blocks. The petanque area will also be re-sited. These modifications will use two distinct linear sections to minimise noise impact on nearby residents, according to the council.
The project also plans new pedestrian crossings on Río de Janeiro Avenue. It will improve pavements to strengthen the park’s connection with its surroundings. Existing pathways will remain. The council will completely renew the park’s lighting. New urban furniture, including benches, chairs, bins, and fountains, will be installed. These new elements will meet accessibility criteria for people with reduced mobility.
Enhancing Green Spaces and Accessibility
The renovation forms part of the Programme of Proximity and Interior Spaces. This programme is itself part of the City Council’s Pla Clima. The Pla Clima aims to transform and increase the city’s green spaces. It incorporates shade, re-naturalisation, and climate change adaptation measures. The council also confirmed the proposal incorporates resident demands. These demands arose from participatory processes.
The central multi-purpose area of the park will be maintained. The council will increase vegetation throughout the park. The council will use soft pavements to improve rain drainage. These pavements will also offer refuge during warmer months. This design choice supports the city’s climate goals.
Next Steps for Can Dragó Park
Before works begin, the project will undergo a 30-working-day public exhibition period. During this time, residents can submit objections and propose modifications. After this process and the awarding of contracts, the intervention will take approximately one year. The council assures that pedestrian circulation will be maintained throughout. Access to local facilities, nearby shops, and the Can Dragó sports area will also be guaranteed. The first planned action involves establishing the new dog area. This will allow it to become operational as soon as possible.
