The fire occurred in the Horta-Guinardó district, a sprawling residential area in the north of the city known for its steep hills and panoramic views. Specifically, the blaze took place in El Carmel, a densely populated neighbourhood perched on the slopes of the Turó de la Rovira, home to the famous Bunkers del Carmel viewpoint.
Emergency Services Respond to Early Morning Blaze
The incident unfolded on Saturday, 28 February, at the intersection of Carrer de Sigüenza and Carrer Ramón de Rocafull. Alarmed residents alerted the Guardia Urbana, Barcelona’s municipal police force, who were dispatched to the scene along with fire crews to extinguish the blaze.
Although authorities stated no casualties, unconfirmed witness accounts suggest a close call. Local news outlet Metrópoli Abierta first reported neighbours claimed two young people narrowly escaped the vehicle moments before the fire took hold. These reports remain unverified.
Public Safety in Focus
Despite no injuries, this incident highlights public safety concerns in the neighbourhood and wider district. El Carmel recently made headlines due to an ongoing search for a missing minor, keeping the community on high alert.
In the Horta-Guinardó district, authorities are tackling youth crime, including a recent operation where Mossos d’Esquadra seized weapons from youths at Horta Metro station. The cause of Saturday’s car fire remains under investigation and is not currently linked to criminal activity. Nevertheless, such events heighten residents’ concerns about safety and order.
Vehicle and public infrastructure fires are a recurring concern across the Barcelona metropolitan area. Recently, a van fire in a supermarket car park in Sant Adrià de Besòs was the second such incident there. Elsewhere, a fire at a Ciutat Vella police station prompted a police union to criticise its “obsolete” facilities, highlighting dangers of ageing infrastructure.
The cause of the El Carmel fire is yet to be determined. The Guardia Urbana will investigate the blaze.
