Police in the Barcelona metropolitan area have arrested five men suspected of operating a prolific car theft gang. This group was responsible for a sharp rise in vehicle break-ins across L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat.

The Mossos d’Esquadra confirmed the arrests on Saturday. They revealed the staggering criminal history of the group. Between them, the five detainees had accumulated 204 prior police records. Significantly, 123 of these were specifically related to thefts from vehicles.

A Surge in Daily Break-ins

Authorities launched an investigation earlier this year after detecting a notable spike in crime reports. During peak periods, police were receiving between 15 and 20 complaints daily regarding forced entry into parked cars in the two municipalities.

Investigators from the Southern Metropolitan Region quickly identified that the surge was not random. Instead, it was the work of a highly active group of repeat offenders. The suspects, aged between 32 and 40, were detained in a series of operations conducted between 25 January and 1 February.

According to a police statement, the impact of the operation has been immediate. Consequently, criminal activity of this type has “decreased notably in the two affected municipalities” since the arrests were made.

Trading Stolen Goods for Drugs

The investigation shed light on the motivations driving the theft spree. The break-ins occurred primarily at night in outdoor car parks. These were often in areas frequented by individuals struggling with drug addiction.

Police described a cycle where the thieves would target vehicles in concentrated bursts over short periods. They stole a variety of items that were easily portable and simple to sell on the black market, including:

  • Sunglasses and loose coins
  • GPS devices and audio players
  • V16 emergency beacons
  • Vacuum cleaners

“The stolen objects had an easy outlet in the illicit market,” a Mossos spokesperson explained. “They were recurrently used to obtain drugs in exchange.” This statement directly links the wave of thefts to local drug trafficking issues.

Operation Kanpai

This crackdown falls under the umbrella of ‘Plan Kanpai’. This is a strategic initiative by the Mossos d’Esquadra designed to tackle multi-recidivism (repeat offending). It operates through cooperation with other law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.

The operation was carried out in coordination with the Barcelona Provincial Prosecutor’s Office and prosecutors from L’Hospitalet. Specific preventive surveillance allowed officers to catch the suspects in the act. In all cases, the alleged thieves were arrested while committing robberies inside vehicles.
