A significant carbon monoxide leak at a Puigcerdà sports centre forced the evacuation of approximately 200 people on Sunday afternoon. Consequently, local emergency services mounted a major response, attending to nearly 60 individuals at the scene.

Authorities raised the alarm at 17:22 after being notified of the gas leak at the Club Poliesportiu Puigcerdà. Therefore, as a preventative measure, the facility was immediately cleared. Users from both the ground and first floors were moved to an adjacent outdoor court for safety.

Rapid Emergency Response to Puigcerdà Carbon Monoxide Leak

The Medical Emergency System (SEM) deployed ten ambulances to the site. Initially, reports suggested 34 people required attention. However, updated figures from the SEM confirmed that professionals attended to 58 individuals in total. Fortunately, all cases were reported as mild. This significant mobilization echoes the response seen during the recent fatal train accident in Gelida.

Most of those affected were treated on-site. Meanwhile, a small number required hospital transfer for further observation. Among them was a minor who was taken to the Hospital de la Cerdanya, according to initial reports. The emergency medical teams are frequently called to various incidents, including a fatal scooter accident in Sant Cugat not long ago.

Safety Procedures Activated After Puigcerdà Leak

Firefighters from the Generalitat mobilised five units to the sports complex. Their teams conducted gas concentration measurements to locate the source of the leak. In addition, they carried out extensive ventilation of the premises to restore safety.

In response to the incident, Civil Protection activated the pre-alert phase of the PROCICAT emergency plan. This is a standard protocol for civil protection emergencies in Catalonia. Authorities have not yet released specific details regarding the cause of the leak. Public safety remains a key concern across the region, as evidenced by a recent study on Catalonia’s dangerous roads and accident costs.
