According to Tot Barcelona, this olfactory tribute aims to translate Barcelona’s architecture and spirit into a wearable experience.
Barcelona Perfume: An Olfactory Journey Through the City
Vanessa Martínez, Carinsa’s executive director, describes the new fragrance as “a tribute to the city and its capacity to inspire innovation and emotions.” The company views the senses as “a universal language capable of connecting cultures,” and through this project, they aim to showcase the talent emerging from Barcelona on a global stage. Consequently, the perfume represents more than just a scent—it’s an aromatic ambassador.
The fragrance structure tells Barcelona’s story through three distinct aromatic layers. The top notes—lemon, bergamot, cardamom, and pepper—evoke the city’s morning vitality. Meanwhile, the heart notes of lavender, rosemary, orange blossom, and fig leaves represent urban elegance and Mediterranean calm. Finally, the base notes of patchouli, sandalwood, almond, and vanilla recall warm evenings and Catalan tradition.
This launch forms part of a broader strategy to create city-inspired fragrances worldwide. Following their ‘Perfume de Madrid’ in 2024, Carinsa is developing scents dedicated to New York and other European capitals. Therefore, the Barcelona perfume initiative positions the company as a global olfactory ambassador, merging creativity, science, and urban identity.
Parallel to the launch, Carinsa has inaugurated ‘Esencia Carinsa’, a new space on Passeig de Gràcia dedicated to training, innovation, and sector collaboration. This space also hosts the Alberto Martínez Institute, focused on research, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. The move strengthens the company’s commitment to Barcelona’s creative and scientific community.
Founded in 1993 by chemical engineer Alberto Martínez Ortega, Carinsa has become an international reference in aromas, fragrances, and technological solutions for the food, cosmetic, and perfumery industries. Currently employing 200 professionals of 33 nationalities at its Sant Quirze del Vallès headquarters, the company maintains a strong scientific focus—30% of staff work in R&D, and 20% are industrial doctors, aromatists, or perfumers.
The Barcelona perfume project reflects how local businesses are finding innovative ways to celebrate and export Catalan culture. Furthermore, it demonstrates how sensory experiences can become powerful tools for cultural connection and international branding. As Barcelona continues to inspire artists and creators across various fields, this fragrant interpretation adds a new dimension to how we experience and share the city’s essence.
