The Carmel Neighbourhood Association has closed after 53 years of activism. The group announced its dissolution on social media this week, citing lack of members and funding.

The neighborhood organization, founded in 1972, is disbanding because it does not have enough members or financial resources.

The association started in 1972, though its roots go back earlier. A predecessor group called Centro Social del Carmelo formed in the late 1960s. Local residents and shanty town dwellers created it during Franco’s dictatorship.

Fighting for basic rights

The original group fought for political and social rights. They demanded attention from public authorities who ignored the neighbourhood. Conditions in Carmel were deteriorating but officials did nothing.

The official association took over in 1972. It intensified campaigns to improve living conditions. Members pushed hard for rehousing programmes within the same neighbourhood.

Part of Barcelona’s activist movement

Barcelona’s neighbourhood movement grew powerful between the 1950s and 1970s. The Federació d’Associacions Veïnals de Barcelona (FAVB) became its public face. The federation formed officially in summer 1972.

However, neighbourhood associations only joined between 1974 and 1975. Before that, shopkeepers and street groups dominated the federation. The shift gave residents a stronger voice.

End of an era

The board voted unanimously to dissolve at their final meeting. They confirmed the association was no longer viable. A liquidation committee will now handle the closure process.

FAVB will advise the committee during the formal dissolution. The closure marks the end of over half a century of community organising. Many Barcelona activists see it as a significant loss.

Fewer people join neighbourhood groups nowadays. Younger residents often don’t engage with traditional associations. This leaves longstanding groups struggling to survive financially and organisationally.
