Carrefour has launched its first airport-based supermarket in Spain, opening a Carrefour City in Terminal 2 of Barcelona-El Prat. The compact-format store is designed for travellers, companions and airport staff, offering quick access to essentials in a high-traffic setting.

The new shop stocks around 1,000 items ranging from cold drinks, snacks and fruit to pantry basics such as eggs, milk and coffee. It also features Catalan local products, hygiene and personal care items, as well as travel accessories, catering to last-minute needs of passengers on the go.
According to the company, this project forms part of Carrefour España’s 2025 expansion plan, which aims to surpass 100 new openings and reach 1,600 stores nationwide by year’s end. The retailer also expects the initiative to generate more than 700 jobs in 2026.
The decision to locate in Barcelona’s Terminal 2 responds to the terminal’s high passenger flow, and the company hopes the new outlet will offer both convenience and a touch of local flavour to international travellers.
By venturing into airports, Carrefour joins a trend of major retailers seeking visibility in transport hubs, where demand for immediate, versatile shopping options continues to rise. Here is hoping that the prices that that charge are akin to the regular prices they offer in their regular stores, instead of inflated “airport” prices.
