Police have arrested a 16-year-old male at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport. Consequently, this detention is directly linked to the fatal Castelldefels bus stabbing last July. The arrest concludes a months-long international search for the suspect, who fled Spain immediately after the incident.

The Mossos d’Esquadra confirmed the minor’s detention. He is alleged to be responsible for a man’s death in the early hours of 18 July 2025. This violent incident is part of a wider trend, as detailed in recent Barcelona crime statistics.

Castelldefels bus stabbing: Fugitive surrenders

Following the July attack, the suspect left Spain. Therefore, authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant. Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) had identified the teenager as the alleged perpetrator shortly after the crime. Meanwhile, this case highlights growing concerns about youth gangs evolving into organised crime in the region.

According to Crónica Global, the young man voluntarily returned to Catalonia on Monday. He then surrendered to the Mossos d’Esquadra upon arrival. Following his airport arrest, he was placed at the disposal of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office. In addition, authorities continue to track the pattern of repeat offending in Catalonia. This remains a significant challenge for law enforcement.

Fatal Castelldefels bus stabbing incident

The stabbing occurred on a bus in Castelldefels, south of Barcelona. Emergency medical personnel from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) treated the victim at the scene. He had sustained a severe stab wound.

Despite efforts to stabilise him, the victim died from his injuries hours later at Bellvitge Hospital. His urgent transfer to the medical facility proved unsuccessful.
