Catalan exports fell by 2.3% in October, a significant downturn contrasting with Spain’s overall growth.

According to data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, the region’s merchandise exports reached €9,433.2 million.

This decline occurred while national exports across Spain increased by 3.3% during the same period.

Catalonia’s share of Spain’s total exports remained substantial at 25.9%. The chemical sector continued to be the region’s primary industrial export driver, accounting for 27.7% of the total. Furthermore, capital goods followed at 16.3%, with food, beverages, and tobacco at 15.9%. The automotive sector represented 14.4% of exports.

Catalan Exports Face Trade Deficit Challenge

Imports into Catalonia also decreased, dropping 5.7% to €9,866.8 million. Consequently, this resulted in a trade deficit of €433.6 million for October. However, this figure marks an improvement from the €813.2 million deficit recorded in October 2024. The coverage rate, which measures exports against imports, stood at 95.6%.

Looking at the broader picture, the year-to-date figures from January to October show a more positive trend. Catalan exports during this period grew by 1.1%, reaching €84,784.2 million. This represents 26.1% of Spain’s total exports. Meanwhile, imports for the ten-month period rose by 3.7% to €96,409.3 million.

The regional economic performance comes amid broader investment in the local industrial base. For instance, significant capital is being directed towards sectors like pharmaceuticals, as seen with the €100 million investment in a new Barcelona-area plant by AGC Pharma Chemicals. Such investments may help bolster future export capacity in key industries.

Ultimately, the October data highlights a monthly contraction for Catalan exports against a backdrop of national expansion. The figures underscore the region’s crucial yet fluctuating role within the Spanish economy. Analysts will watch closely to see if the positive year-to-date growth can be sustained in the coming months.
