Catalan fire stations are installing emergency prefabricated facilities to accommodate a historic wave of female recruits.

The Generalitat’s fire service faces urgent infrastructure challenges as approximately 100 new female firefighters prepare to join stations across the region starting January 1st.

Emergency Measures for Gender Integration

Fire stations in Gandesa and Cambrils will install temporary prefabricated modules as changing facilities within weeks.

Consequently, these emergency measures address the immediate need for dignified spaces for female personnel. Furthermore, this temporary solution comes while permanent renovations are planned and executed.

The sub-inspector Mari Muñoz explained that these two stations couldn’t complete even minor renovations in time. However, other stations like L’Ametlla de Mar, Lloret and Palafrugell have successfully implemented rapid space redistribution projects.

Historic Recruitment Transformation

This initiative represents the first major female recruitment drive in the Generalitat’s fire service history. The recruitment follows a 40% quota reservation in the 2023 competitive examinations. Therefore, the number of women in the service will immediately double from current levels.

According to recent economic developments, Catalonia’s public services are undergoing significant transformation. The fire service restructuring reflects broader changes across the region’s infrastructure.

In Gandesa, where no women currently serve, ten female firefighters will join from January. Meanwhile, Cambrils will welcome one additional female professional to join eight already serving there. Remarkably, Gandesa will achieve gender parity with women comprising half the permanent staff.

Regional Infrastructure Challenges

Six fire stations will transition from having no female personnel to nearly a dozen women across shifts. Specifically, Pont de Suert will increase from 0 to 13 women, Sort from 0 to 9, Ascó from 0 to 12, Gandesa from 0 to 10, Ulldecona from 0 to 7 and Llançà from 0 to 9.

Adrià Tejedor from CATAC notes that female recruits typically receive slightly lower examination scores. Accordingly, they often get assigned to smaller, peripheral stations that have experienced underinvestment. These stations now require urgent infrastructure upgrades.

Parallel to the temporary solutions, approximately thirty stations have begun or planned adaptation works. Stations in Roses and Vall d’Aro already have renovations underway. Meanwhile, Olot, Sant Celoni and Santa Coloma de Gramenet will commence work shortly.

According to Barcelona’s recent infrastructure investments, public service modernisation remains a regional priority. The fire service upgrades form part of this broader commitment to improving essential services.

The Generalitat’s fire service acknowledges this represents both an internal restructuring and progressive infrastructure update. Ultimately, these changes will create a more inclusive and modern emergency service for all Catalonia.
