Catalan language controversy has dominated political discussions after the regional government concluded an investigation into a controversial theatre sketch.
The performance, titled ‘Esas Latinas’ by Teatro Sin Papeles, depicted a Spanish-speaking individual struggling to access healthcare and administrative services while being repeatedly asked to speak Catalan.
The sketch was presented during the official launch of the 2024 Discrimination Report, generating significant political backlash.
Furthermore, Barcelona City Council, which organised the event, publicly apologised and revealed the performance had cost €700.
Catalan Language Controversy Investigation Findings
The government’s investigation, concluded on October 2nd, determined the performance did not constitute a hate crime.

Officials stated the sketch fell within protected artistic expression and freedom of speech boundaries. However, the Conselleria de Política Lingüística strongly condemned the content.
Francesc Xavier Vila, the language policy councillor, responded to parliamentary questions by stating the sketch “seriously misrepresents the linguistic reality of Catalonia.” He added that it “fosters animosity against the Catalan language and promotes stereotypes that harm social cohesion.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Síndic de Greuges received more than 300 complaints about the performance. The ombudsman’s office agreed the content should be condemned for making statements “contrary to linguistic rights” but concurred it didn’t constitute a hate crime.
The political fallout extended to Barcelona’s municipal government, where opposition parties demanded resignations beyond the initial apologies. Junts and CUP representatives had initially pressured the government to file a formal complaint about the performance.
Additionally, Cassandra Action, a platform defending Catalan national interests, has separately filed a complaint with Barcelona’s Hate Crimes Prosecutor. The group’s lawyers consider the sketch “offensive and humiliating” against the Catalan national minority.
