Nearly 9,000 adults in Catalonia will soon access new Catalan language courses for adults. This initiative addresses a chronic shortage of beginner places. Consequently, officials are expanding voluntary learning opportunities across the region.
The Consortium for Linguistic Normalisation (CPNL) is financing 350 new classes. These sessions focus on initial and basic levels (A1 and A2). Therefore, they target residents who cannot yet speak Catalan or understand public signage.

Catalan Language Courses for Adults Address High Demand
The government partners with 104 municipalities and 100 local entities to deliver training. This initiative creates 8,950 new spots. In addition, it supplements 42,000 places already managed by the CPNL.
Francesc-Xavier Vila, the Minister of Linguistic Policy, acknowledged that demand still outstrips supply. He noted that waiting lists remain active despite expansion. According to Vila, bringing courses to more municipalities often reveals “hidden demand”. This expansion comes as officials ensure compliance in formal education. For example, they recently ordered a Catalan language audit at a Terrassa school.
Funding for New Catalan Language Courses for Adults
New subsidies cover teacher hiring, educational materials, and course quality monitoring. Vanessa Bretxa, Director General of Access to Knowledge, explained the funding targets areas with scarce training. This move complements other recent government subsidies for Catalan language support.
Many organisations selected to run these Catalan language courses for adults already work with newcomers. Others operate in labour, cultural, or educational sectors. This broad approach expands the language’s reach beyond traditional classrooms. It aligns with cultural efforts like a major translation initiative to revive Catalan.
