Catalan journalists demand international press access to Gaza as Israeli border restrictions continue despite October’s ceasefire agreement.

Approximately 40 Catalan journalistic organisations have united to call for immediate entry rights for foreign media into the besieged territory.

The collective statement, organised by the Journalists’ Association of Catalonia, highlights the devastating toll on Palestinian media professionals.

Furthermore, they report that Israeli military forces have killed more than 250 Palestinian journalists since October 2023 in what they describe as deliberate attacks aimed at silencing coverage of the conflict.

Catalan Journalists Demand Action Against Media Restrictions

The manifesto presentation featured powerful testimony from former Al Jazeera Gaza correspondent Youmna El-Sayed, who detailed the catastrophic living conditions. “Hunger and disease have become weapons of war,” she stated during the emotional address at the journalists’ association headquarters.

El-Sayed provided disturbing examples of the humanitarian crisis, noting that current food deliveries cannot address child malnutrition because “children are being fed chocolate, sugar and soft drinks.” Consequently, proper nutritional support remains critically absent from aid efforts.

The event was organised in collaboration with Journalism Against the Genocide in Palestine, a collective advocating for media freedom in conflict zones. Meanwhile, participating journalists emphasised that international pressure remains essential for protecting press freedoms.

“We are exhausted and for Gaza’s journalists it’s very important that you enter,” El-Sayed urged her international colleagues. “If journalists don’t apply pressure, you abandon your rights to press freedom.”

This Catalan initiative represents one of several recent international advocacy efforts originating from Catalonia addressing global human rights concerns. The region’s media organisations continue to demonstrate strong commitment to press freedom principles worldwide.

The ongoing border restrictions prevent international journalists from independently verifying conditions within Gaza, creating what press freedom advocates describe as an information blackout. Therefore, the Catalan journalists demand immediate access for foreign media to document the situation firsthand.
