Catalonia’s Parliament has endorsed a Junts per Catalunya initiative to unblock construction of two crucial rail interchanges in Sant Cugat del Vallès. The proposal urges the Generalitat to pressure the central government to sign the necessary agreement before the end of 2025. This development follows years of delays in improving public transport connectivity between the Vallès Occidental and Vallès Oriental regions.

The Transport Proposal

Junts deputy Salvador Vergés defended the initiative in Parliament, describing it as urgently needed for the Vallès transport network. He emphasised that this area contains approximately 1.5 million residents across both Vallès regions. Additionally, it represents Catalonia’s most significant productive concentration area.

The planned interchanges at Hospital General and Volpelleres would connect Rodalies R8 line with FGC S1 and S2 services. According to officials, this creates a mesh network between different lines and operators. Currently, public transport between the two Vallès regions requires travelling through Barcelona first.

Regional Significance

Sant Cugat Mayor Josep Maria Vallès welcomed the proposal’s approval, highlighting its importance for regional mobility. He stated that Sant Cugat and the wider comarca need these interchanges to improve city connections. The initiative also has support from business organisations and local groups.

Vergés indicated the Hospital General interchange could become a strategic intermodal node for territorial mobility. However, the project requires coordination between multiple government levels. Meanwhile, similar transport improvements continue across the region as shown in Glòries tram works.

The mayor has requested that the Government commission preliminary projects to Ferrocarrils promptly. This development occurs alongside other infrastructure initiatives throughout Catalonia. The Parliament’s backing signals strong cross-party support for resolving long-standing transport deficiencies in the Vallès area.

Next steps involve formal negotiations between regional and state transport authorities. The 2025 deadline represents a critical timeframe for securing construction agreements. Local officials remain cautiously optimistic about achieving the necessary bureaucratic progress.
