Núria Parlon, the Consellera de Interior, stated, “This is one of the most important mobility operations of the year.” She emphasised the initiative operates under a “zero vision criterion.” Its aim is to reduce accidents and prevent fatalities.

Semana Santa Traffic Phases

The special traffic operation will unfold in two distinct phases. The first phase begins this weekend. It coincides with the start of school holidays. This marks an initial exodus from urban areas. Officials project 580,000 vehicles will depart the Barcelona metropolitan area on Saturday. 240,000 vehicles are expected to return on Sunday.

The second, more intensive phase commences on Holy Thursday. It concludes on Easter Monday. Friday is expected to be the busiest day. 560,000 vehicles will leave the Catalan capital. On Easter Monday, 590,000 vehicles are forecast to return to the Barcelona area.

Consellera Parlon appealed directly to drivers. She urged them “not to drink or consume drugs.” She also asked them to “respect speed limits.” Drivers should also “observe rest breaks for goods transport.” This ensures people can return home safe and sound. These measures are crucial for road safety during peak travel periods.

Road Safety Measures

Ramon Lamiel, the Director of the SCT, highlighted additional measures and conditions. He noted that snow is anticipated on mountain roads. He specifically mentioned the C-16, C-17, and N-260. Furthermore, additional lanes will be implemented. These will be on the northern and southern sections of the AP-7. They will also be on the C-32 in the Maresme region.

Heavy vehicles, such as lorries, will face specific hourly limitations and restrictions during the operation. These controls aim to manage traffic flow. They also enhance safety for all road users across Catalonia.

This comprehensive deployment underscores the authorities’ commitment. They aim to ensure safe travel for hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists. These individuals will navigate Catalonia’s roads during the busy Semana Santa period. Continued vigilance and driver cooperation remain essential for a successful and accident-free holiday.
