Illa Criticises Trump’s Rhetoric
Illa made these remarks during his address at the Municipalism Forum, an event organised by Prensa Ibérica and El Periódico de Catalunya. The forum, held on Wednesday, provides a platform for discussing local governance and broader societal issues. During his speech, Illa expressed regret that global stability was “subject to threats expressed with such frivolity and forcefulness.” He directly criticised Trump’s language and attitude. This highlighted the dangers of such rhetoric in international relations. “We stand for ‘yes’ to peace, which is not an impossible utopia. We must commit to working towards a world governed by peace,” Illa stated, underscoring his commitment to peaceful resolutions.
Call for Multilateralism and Peace
The Catalan President advocated for “redoubling efforts to restore common sense in all areas, especially in international relations.” He stressed the importance of ending the practice where the most powerful dictate terms. He views this policy as detrimental to global harmony. Illa urged a return to “multilateral frameworks, with agreed rules” in international relations. He believes the ceasefire offers a crucial truce to resolve differences rationally, sanely, and sensibly. This approach promotes dialogue and mutual respect among nations.
Catalonia’s Stance on Global Diplomacy
The Generalitat de Catalunya, Catalonia’s autonomous government, frequently comments on national and international issues. These statements often reflect the region’s values or potential impacts on its economy and residents. Illa’s remarks align with a broader European stance favouring diplomatic solutions over aggressive rhetoric. This perspective is widely shared by many residents in Barcelona and across Catalonia. The region has a history of supporting international cooperation and peaceful conflict resolution. Illa’s call for renewed diplomatic efforts therefore underscores a desire for stability in global affairs.
