Early snowfall is boosting Catalan ski resort bookings for the upcoming Immaculate Conception holiday weekend.
With schools closed and fresh powder on the ground, Pyrenean stations are reporting near-full occupancy, marking a strong start to the winter season.
This contrasts sharply with last year’s disappointing conditions.

Consequently, the sector is optimistic about recovering momentum. The Masella station, which opened on 26 November, already has nearly all its 36 kilometres operational.
“We’ve had quite a few days to prepare,” explained station spokesperson Ramon Boter. He noted that while families will start arriving on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be the busiest days.
Early Snowfall Drives High Occupancy Rates
Accommodation providers are seeing the benefit. The Alp Hotel Masella, located slopeside, is almost fully sold out with 90% occupancy. Furthermore, the Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations of Cerdanya expects rates to reach 95%.
“An increase in visitor interest has been detected in recent weeks,” said the association’s president, Núria Vidal. Most clients have opted for two-night stays, either Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday.
This pattern is also reflected in lift pass sales. Daily passes cost €54, with a four-day lot priced at €162. Additionally, class bookings and equipment rentals are up significantly.
“It will be a good bridge holiday because we have snow and the weather will be good, which means sun, cold and calm wind. All this will encourage people,” Boter remarked.
Meanwhile, further west in the Lleida Pyrenees, stations hope to sell over 50,000 passes if conditions hold. Baqueira Beret began its season on 29 November with its best pre-pandemic start, while other major resorts have opened in recent days.
According to recent tourism data, the region is keen to capitalise on strong domestic interest. The early snow provides a perfect opportunity.
For the station at Port del Comte in the Pre-Pyrenees, where snow arrives later, forecasts are more moderate. Hotels there are at 50% occupancy, but the first skiers arrived on Friday.
Finally, the Tavascan station, which faced uncertainty about reopening, will open this Saturday for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, albeit without its chairlift operational.
Overall, Pyrenean accommodations expect occupancy between 80% and 85%, according to data from the Lleida Provincial Council’s Tourism Board. “We are satisfied because the forecasts are good. This bridge holiday always works well in this area,” noted its vice president, Juan Antonio Serrano.
The stations operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) have opened with over 60 skiable kilometres available across the Catalan Pyrenees. “There is a desire for snow. We have a very good forecast for attendance,” said FGC Tourism’s Business and Strategy Director, Enric Serra.
This season also sees the launch of a new pass. For a €15 annual subscription, skiers can save more the more they ski, with skiing becoming free after the 17th day.
The holiday spirit extends to Andorra, where Ordino Arcalís opened on 27 November. The Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal stations joined this week, with over 150 kilometres of slopes now available.
The Immaculate Conception bridge holiday kicks off a season that could last until early May for some resorts. “We open as soon as we can and we extend for as long as we can,” Boter summarised. For the Lleida Pyrenees stations, closure usually occurs around late March or Easter Monday.
“With almost all stations open right now with a good level of snow, we foresee this will be a very good ski season,” Serrano concluded. This positive outlook suggests a robust period for local economies, a welcome contrast to broader concerns that regional wealth does not always translate into well-being.
