A major storm emergency is unfolding across Catalonia, with emergency services searching for a missing surfer and hundreds of calls flooding in due to severe flooding and snowfall.

Maritime Rescue teams are looking for a windsurfer who reportedly fell into the sea off the coast of Gavà, near Barcelona.

Catalan Storm Emergency Triggers Multiple Evacuations The severe weather has forced several evacuations. Firefighters rescued 16 people from a holiday home in Vall d’en Bas, Girona, after the rising Fluvià river left them stranded.

In a separate incident in Sant Feliu de Pallerols, also in Girona, 12 people were evacuated from a rural house cut off by a flooded stream. Firefighters transported them to safety using their vehicles.

However, one woman in Sabadell is in critical condition after a lamppost fell on her due to strong winds.

Catalan Civil Protection maintains the INUNCAT flood emergency plan on alert. They warn people not to approach rivers or attempt to cross flooded areas.

Rivers Reach Danger Levels as Snow Paralyzes Roads River levels are a primary concern, especially in Girona. According to the Catalan Water Agency, the Tordera river at Fogars is flowing at 183 m³/s and the Ges at Torelló at 79 m³/s-both at danger thresholds.

The storm has also brought heavy snow to higher areas, paralyzing roads and ski resorts. Firefighters had to evacuate dozens of vehicles trapped by snow on the N-260 and GI-4016 roads in Cerdanya and Ripollès, which connect to the La Molina ski station.

Several ski resorts, including La Molina, Núria.Vallter in Girona, are closed due to a high avalanche risk, with 50-75 cm of fresh snow. Forecasts predict another half-metre could fall in Ripollès.

The Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) warns that rainfall could exceed 200 liters per square metre in 24 hours in northeastern areas, with totals potentially nearing 300 liters over the entire episode.

This Catalan storm emergency follows a pattern of extreme weather testing the region’s infrastructure, much like the recent preparations for future heat crises.
