Catalan language usage in Barcelona’s metropolitan area has declined to just 24.7% of residents using it as their habitual language according to new government data.

The latest Linguistic Uses Survey reveals a significant drop from previous years, highlighting ongoing shifts in the region’s linguistic landscape.

The survey, conducted between September 2023 and April 2024 among 8,682 people aged 15 and over, shows a clear downward trend.

Furthermore, the current 24.7% figure represents a substantial decrease from 2018’s 27.5% and 2003’s 37.8%. Meanwhile, the city of Barcelona itself recorded slightly higher usage at 26.9% of residents using Catalan as their habitual language.

According to the official survey results published by El País, the metropolitan Barcelona area remains Catalonia’s most populated territory but also hosts the smallest proportion of people born locally at just 56.6%. Additionally, it ranks among the three areas with the highest foreign-born population at 25.1%.

Regional Variations in Language Usage

The study reveals significant variations across different comarcas surrounding Barcelona. Maresme and Vallès Oriental, along with Barcelona city, showed higher Catalan knowledge and usage rates than the metropolitan average. Conversely, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, northern Barcelonès and southern Baix Llobregat recorded “much lower” figures.

Vallès Occidental and northern Baix Llobregat demonstrated dynamics more aligned with the overall metropolitan area average. These regional differences reflect broader demographic patterns across Catalonia’s diverse territories.

Outside the metropolitan area, central Catalonia comarcas, Terres de l’Ebre and Alt Pirineu showed the highest Catalan knowledge and usage. Consequently, these areas also feature the highest proportion of people born in Catalonia at 68%. Terres de l’Ebre led with 66.8% of residents using Catalan habitually, followed by Alt Pirineu at 56.4% and central comarcas at 59.6%.

Demographic Factors Influencing Language Patterns

The survey highlights how demographic changes continue to shape linguistic habits across Catalonia. Ponent and Girona comarcas, while showing Catalan usage above the regional average, also demonstrated higher use of languages other than Catalan or Spanish. This situation is “clearly attributable to their percentages of foreign-born residents, exceeding 25%”.

In Girona comarcas, Catalan remained the habitual language for 45.1% of the population in 2023, down from 54.1% in 2018. Similarly, Ponent saw a decline from 57% to 51.1% over the same period. These shifts reflect the complex interplay between language preservation and demographic evolution.

The ongoing changes in Catalan language usage patterns mirror other social transformations occurring across Barcelona as the city continues to evolve demographically and culturally.
