Catalan winter road maintenance has mobilised 130 snowploughs and 112 salt storage points across the territory to ensure safe travel during the cold season.

The Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition activated its annual Winter Road Plan this week, which will remain operational until 15 April next year.

This comprehensive infrastructure deployment aims to maintain comfort, flow and safety on Catalonia’s roads while minimising traffic restrictions or closures during adverse weather conditions.

Furthermore, the equipment is strategically distributed according to each area’s specific characteristics and typical winter incidents.

Catalan Winter Road Maintenance Operations

The snow-clearing machinery operates through 33 conservation and maintenance centres spread across the region. During the previous winter season, these vehicles covered an impressive 798,818 kilometres while logging over 90,000 operational hours across 155 days of both preventive and snow-clearing activities.

The Generalitat’s road network currently spans 5,961 kilometres, representing nearly half of all roads in Catalonia. Consequently, on particularly demanding days, the snowplough fleet can travel up to 13,000 kilometres collectively to perform various winter maintenance operations.

This substantial investment in winter readiness comes as Catalonia’s transport infrastructure undergoes significant modernisation across multiple sectors. The regional government’s proactive approach to Catalan winter road maintenance demonstrates its commitment to keeping vital transportation links open throughout the challenging winter months.

According to official communications from the department, the winter plan represents a crucial component of Catalonia’s broader transportation strategy. Therefore, residents and businesses can rely on consistent road access even during the most severe winter weather conditions affecting the region.
