Catalans are Spain’s most culturally active citizens. They attend museums, theatres, concerts, and cinemas more frequently than residents elsewhere in the country, according to Spain’s Ministry of Culture.

The 2024-2025 cultural habits survey shows remarkable differences. Nearly half of Catalans (48%) visited a museum in the past year, compared to the national average of 40.6%. Moreover, 24.8% visited one in the last three months, well above the Spanish average of 18.9%.

The gap widens for performing arts. Some 39.6% of Catalans attended a theatrical performance last year, almost 10 points above the national average. Theatre attendance is particularly strong, with 35% of Catalans catching a show compared to Spain’s 24.7%.

Catalans are also Spain’s most dedicated readers. Around 72.7% read at least one book last year, surpassing the national average of 64.9%. Furthermore, 62.1% maintained their reading habit in the past three months, seven points above the rest of Spain.

However, classical music remains a niche interest. Only one in ten Catalans attended a concert in the past year. Additionally, two out of three have never or almost never been to one.

The survey also revealed declining interest in bullfighting across Spain. The Ministry notes that 20% of former regular attendees have stopped going to bullfights entirely.
