Furthermore, the new fleet will enable responders to handle difficult rescues during adverse weather conditions, including rough seas, strong currents, nighttime operations, and torrential rainfall episodes.
The equipment distribution will significantly bolster existing capabilities. Ten Type C vessels capable of reaching 30 knots with capacity for 12 people will be stationed at coastal fire stations and the Special Actions Group (GRAE) base in Cerdanyola del Vallès. Additionally, seven smaller boats with outboard motors will serve interior waterways across municipalities including Amposta, Tortosa, Móra d’Ebre and Ascó.
Specialised Equipment For Diverse Conditions
The new watercraft are engineered to operate effectively in all types of aquatic environments, from calm inland waters to turbulent coastal conditions. Consequently, firefighters will be better equipped to perform complex rescues that previously posed significant challenges.
The versatile jet ski addition represents another crucial enhancement. Designed for both marine and freshwater operations, it offers maximum reliability and can transport three personnel to incident scenes rapidly. This investment comes amid growing recognition of the need for enhanced emergency response capabilities during extreme weather events across the region.
According to official documents from the Generalitat, the expansion will increase the current fleet from four to significantly more vessels. This substantial upgrade reflects the government’s commitment to public safety and emergency preparedness. The strategic placement of equipment throughout Catalonia ensures faster response times and more effective interventions during water-related emergencies.
Emergency services across Catalonia continue to evolve their approaches to public safety. Meanwhile, other regions are implementing innovative solutions, as demonstrated by the recent deployment of surveillance drones during major public events in neighbouring municipalities. The Catalonia firefighters water rescue enhancement represents a significant step forward in regional emergency response capabilities.
