Catalonia housing crisis has reached alarming levels according to new research revealing nearly 30% of residents cannot afford dignified accommodation. The Oxfam Intermón ‘Living Inequality 2025’ survey of 4,000 people across Spain highlights how housing has become the primary source of inequality throughout the region.

Furthermore, the study indicates that 39.5% of Catalans identify housing as the main area where inequality manifests most severely. Consequently, many residents report making significant lifestyle compromises to manage their living costs.

Wider Impact of Catalonia Housing Crisis

The housing emergency extends beyond mere accommodation concerns. Meanwhile, nearly 40% of survey respondents have skipped dental visits due to financial constraints. Additionally, six in ten Catalans report buying cheaper products and reducing spending on leisure, culture, clothing and footwear.

The situation appears particularly dire for younger generations and marginalised communities. Accordingly, only 14.4% of non-property owners believe they will ever purchase a home. Moreover, racialised communities demonstrate higher levels of workplace dissatisfaction and healthcare access barriers.

Therefore, the research reveals stark generational and class divides in housing prospects. Over 70% of wealthy young people expect family assistance to acquire property, while more than 60% from low-income households consider such support unlikely.

The survey also uncovered significant educational limitations, with 52% of respondents unable to continue their studies for financial reasons. Nevertheless, six in ten Spaniards maintain that eradicating inequalities remains achievable despite current challenges.
