Anti-eviction measures announced by the Catalan government have received strong backing from housing activists who describe the new unit as a significant step forward in protecting vulnerable.

The Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) has welcomed the housing agreement between the Generalitat and Comuns, particularly praising the creation of a dedicated anti-eviction team.
“This is good news because it represents progress from the administration,” the organisation stated in a Monday communiqué. “They’re positioning themselves on the side of people at risk of losing their homes.” The group emphasised that no government can remain neutral when facing eviction cases.
Anti-eviction Unit Requires Comprehensive Support
The housing activists insist the new anti-eviction unit must operate alongside broader social housing initiatives. Furthermore, they argue that proper rehousing solutions and social rental programmes are essential for providing genuine, permanent responses to eviction threats.
Regarding the registry of major property holders and vacant flats, the platform maintains that functional registration systems are crucial. Consequently, such mechanisms enable effective implementation and monitoring of measures affecting multiple property owners.
“Despite arriving late, the two measures included in the agreement respond to some demands we’ve been making to various governments for years,” the PAH noted. The organisation has long campaigned for stronger tenant protections throughout Barcelona’s ongoing housing crisis.
The agreement between governing partners is scheduled for approval during Tuesday’s Executive Council meeting. This development comes amid continuing pressure from housing advocacy groups for more robust intervention in Catalonia’s rental market.
